California New Admittees CLE Requirement

Total CLE Requirements: Each attorney shall complete a minimum of 25 hours of accredited continuing legal education in each three-year reporting cycle, including 19 General credits, 4 Ethics credits, 1 credit in Detection/Prevention of Substance Abuse or Mental Illness, and 1 credit in Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession.

Note: If the table above indicates you must complete a proportional requirement, the total number of hours and hours of legal ethics are pro-rated. Legal ethics hours are part of (not in addition to) total required hours. [Rule 2.72] The special credit hours in detection/prevention of substance abuse and elimination of bias are not required, but any credits earned in those areas may be used to fulfill the general credit hour requirement.

Reporting Date: California is a self-reporting jurisdiction.
Reporting Information: Each active attorney is permanently assigned to one of three compliance groups based on the first letter of their last name:

Compliance Group 1: A-G
Compliance Group 2: H-M
Compliance Group 3: N-Z

California Veteran CLE Requirement

Total CLE Requirements: Each attorney shall complete a minimum of 25 hours of accredited continuing legal education in each three-year reporting cycle, including 19 General credits, 4 Ethics credits, 1 credit in Detection/Prevention of Substance Abuse or Mental Illness, and 1 credit in Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession. A maximum of 12.5 (or one-half) credit hours may be completed through “self-study.” Therefore, at least one-half of these requirements must be fulfilled through activities approved for “participatory” credit.
