New Jersey New Admit CLE Requirement

Total CLE Requirements: Each attorney shall complete a minimum of either 12 or 24 (see the chart below) credit hours of accredited continuing legal education each biennial reporting cycle, at least two (if your requirement is only 12 credits) or four (if your requirement is 24 credits) credit hours of which shall be in ethics and professionalism. At least half of the 12 or 24 credits must be completed through the live lecture format.

“Transitional reporting period” means that you have a one-year period to obtain 12 credits. At least two of the credits must be in ethics and/or professionalism and the balance of credits in any legal, judicial, or other educational activity accredited by the Board. No more than 6 of the 12 credits can be earned from alternative verifiable learning format courses.

“Must complete new admit requirement” means that during this 2-year reporting period you must obtain 24 credits. Of those 24 credits, at least four credits in must be in ethics and/or professionalism, 15 credits in any five of the nine New Jersey subject areas, and the balance of credits in any legal, judicial, or other educational activity accredited by the Board. No more than 12 of the 24 credits can be earned from alternative verifiable learning format courses.

Please note that at least fifteen (15) credits must be in any five of the nine NJ subject areas for newly admitted lawyers which includes, New Jersey basic estate administration; New Jersey basic estate planning; New Jersey civil or criminal trial preparation; New Jersey family law practice; New Jersey real estate closing procedures; New Jersey trust and business accounting; New Jersey landlord/tenant practice; New Jersey municipal court practice; and New Jersey law office management., and the balance of credits in any legal, judicial, or other educational activity accredited by the Board.

Reporting: New Jersey is a self-reporting jurisdiction.
Reporting Information: Each active attorney is permanently assigned to one of two compliance groups, with one group reporting each year:

Compliance Group 1: Those whose birthdays are during the period from January 1 through June 30 must certify their compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration Statement (or on such other form as provided by the Board) of each even numbered year following the completion of a compliance period.

Compliance Group 2: Those whose birthdays are during the period from July 1 to December 31 must certify their compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration Statement (or on such other form as provided by the Board) of each odd numbered year following the completion of a compliance period.

Of the 24 credits, at least half (12) must be completed through the live lecture format.
