Illinois CLE Requirements

Illinois Newly Admitted CLE Requirement

Total CLE Requirements: The requirement for newly-admitted attorneys includes three elements:
1. A Basic Skills Course of at least six (6) professional responsibility hours of accredited continuing legal education in topics such as practice techniques and procedures, client communications, use of trust accounts, attorneys’ other obligations under the Court’s Rules, record keeping, professional responsibility, and rudimentary elements of practice,
2. Nine (9) additional hours of MCLE credit, and
3. Reporting to the MCLE Board

CLE Deadline: June 30th
Reporting: Illinois is a self-reporting jurisdiction.
Reporting Information: The Completion Deadline for the requirement for newly-admitted attorneys is one (1) year from the end of the month in which the attorney was admitted. Newly admitted attorneys must then report compliance within 31 days of the Completion Deadline, which is known as the Reporting Deadline.

The newly admitted attorney’s initial two-year reporting period begins, following the Completion Deadline for the newly-admitted attorney requirement, on the next July 1st of an even-numbered year for lawyers whose last names begin with A-M, and on the next July 1st of an odd-numbered year for lawyers whose last names begin with N-Z.

Illinois Veteran CLE Requirement

Total CLE Requirements: Each attorney must complete a minimum of 30 hours of accredited continuing legal education each biennial (two-year) reporting period, with at least six (6) credit hours in professional responsibility.

CLE Deadline: June 30th
Reporting: Illinois is a self-reporting jurisdiction.
Reporting Information: Each Illinois attorney is placed in one of two reporting groups based on the attorney’s last name and must complete their CLE requirement during each two-year reporting cycle.

An attorney’s two-year reporting period begins on July 1st of even-numbered years for lawyers whose last names begin with A-M, and on July 1st of odd-numbered years for lawyers whose last names begin with N-Z.
