MBE Question of the Day

The police suspected that a young artist had stolen some jewelry. The police went to the
artist’s mother’s house where the artist still stayed. They asked the mother if they could
search the artist’s room. She consented. The search turned up nothing but a locked trunk.
The police asked the mother if they could open the trunk. She said it was his and she
had no right to open it herself. They told her she had no standing to object and broke open
the trunk. In the trunk, they found the stolen jewelry. The artist’s motion to prevent introduction of
the jewelry into evidence will most probably be

(A) Denied, because his mother gave consent to search the room.
(B) Denied, because his mother gave implicit consent to open the locked trunk.
(C) Granted, because the artist maintained a private room in his mother’s house.
(D) Granted, because the police violated the artist’s reasonable expectations of
privacy without a warrant.
